Name: Kaito Watari
Series: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
Canon Standing: Post New World Ending (Anguished One's Route)
Age: 18
Birthday & Astrology Sign: July 7th, Cancer
Arcana: Moon
Personality:
Like a lot of Megaten Protagonists, it seems like Kaito is a frighteningly competent person who can do no wrong. He is very good at reading combat situations, despite the fact that he's a civilian with no formal combat training, and the leader of JP's, the shadow organization his group started working with, constantly finds reasons to look up to or praise him, wanting to take him in has his right hand man. Kaito pretty much defaulted to the position of Leader, so there must be something inherently special about him, right?
Well...not really! Kaito's a normal 18-year-old boy going to high school before the Septentrione invasion. He isn't turned into a half-demon, he doesn't have a boatload of issues like many Persona protagonists, he's not actually a contender to inherent a demon throne, he's not in the Marines or SDF...he's a pretty normal guy! Yamato Hotsuin even brings this up, wondering how in the hell a civilian could end up being as competent about being a leader as Kaito. And Kaito just smiles and says, "It's a talent."
This is half joking and half the truth. Joking in that he tries to play it off like it's not a big deal, but he does have a legitimate talent, something that Yamato can't seem to be able to find in the other civilians and can't understand what makes Kaito different from the average person. Mainly, it's people. Understanding them, what makes them tick on the inside, glimpsing their true selves and the emotional atmosphere of the world around him...he has a knack for it, putting it mildly. It's nothing really special, he's just really really observant, but when you combine that with his interest in getting to know others and a willingness to actually talk about feelings or lend an ear to someone who wants to talk about theirs, you get a person who's very easy to trust, a great friend, and a leader that people feel comfortable rallying around.
Under normal circumstances (i.e. when the Apocalypse isn't happening), Kaito is a carefree and kind young man who likes to mess around with people every now and again. When compared to Daichi, Kaito might seem like the irresponsible one of the two. While Daichi bothers to put on his school uniform while going to take a practice exam on a Sunday, Kaito looks like he rolled out of bed and put on some jeans and his gym shirt, his hair never having encountered this alien concept of a "brush" or "comb". Daichi worries about how he's gonna do on the exams, Kaito barely breaks a sweat. Daichi thinks about the future and working in the adult world while Kaito jokes that "jobs are for suckers!" It's almost as if Daichi worries so much that he sucks all the worry out of Kaito until he becomes this zen singularity. He's not really this irresponsible...either that or the disaster that hit Japan (or the world, more like) finally brought his head into gear. Kaito gets good grades and is pretty well-read, he'd just rather do something with his life that he enjoys instead of slaving away for a weekly paycheck in some office. So, what does Kaito enjoy doing? Making his friends laugh, mostly, whether it's from his silly, Loony Toons-esque sense of humor or through coming up with weird videos (so many after school evenings with Daichi, spent like... this) or just making weird song remixes on Mario Paint. If you actually got to know Kaito under normal circumstances, he would definitely come off as the weird but entertaining goofball. He won't immediately start joking with you, though; he clearly tries to get a handle on people and how they'd react to him before pulling one of his jokes. For example, Daichi has the most joke options to respond to him available, some of them even making him the butt of the joke, while it takes awhile for Kaito to even think about joking with the Anguished One, since he's a mysterious person who's really hard to read at first, not to mention really intimidating. And even then, he only really jokes around when it's clear that it would relieve the tension that everyone is feeling or when the situation calls for it otherwise. When things are fine and he knows you, then he reveals his goofiness.
When a crisis happens, that's an entirely different story. Kaito doesn't have the "over think things until you're in an endless feedback loop of panic and worry" problem that Daichi does. He takes things as they come and can quickly change tactics just as fast at the situation itself changes. Not that Daichi can't either, it's just that when shit hits the fan, it's easier for Kaito to cast aside his doubt and his worries to protect his friends and other innocents. Several people comment that Kaito has been hard to phase, given everything that was happening, which is true, since he realizes that he needs to be strong and in control to make sure that things don't fall apart. The most important thing to him is to make sure that nobody dies needlessly or suffers alone. It's how he decided to use Nicaea ever since he averted his own death and how he continued to use the site until the very end. Nobody has to die needlessly, nobody has to bicker philosophical bullshit while the world is literally being deleted around them, nobody has to cast aside their humanity, even when society is crumbling at their feet. He doesn't have time to worry about himself or how he's feeling when there are so many other people who are suffering or need his help!
Perhaps that's why the Anguished One, a mysterious and clearly non-human man who turned out to be the admin for Nicaea and the source of the demon summoning app, refers to Kaito as the "Shining One". He took a site that showed people images of their friends' deaths and used it to avert them, using the site as the Anguished One intended, while gathering both human and demon allies to defeat the invading Septentriones, something the Anguished One didn't anticipate but was pleasantly surprised by the discovery anyway. Kaito united his friends under the banner of surviving against the demons, then defeating the Septentriones, which is impossible under normal circumstances. He's very good at bringing out his friends' strengths and even better at getting them to unite under a cause, since most of them view him at their leader and the lynch pin of their group. It gets to the point where his involvement with any of the factions can turn the tide in deciding what kind of new world with be created. As long as Polaris acknowledges that most of mankind is united under a strong will, he will create a new world according to their ideals.
It's really too bad Kaito decided Polaris could get bent and have the Anguished One take the Heavenly Throne instead.
It should be noted that, even though the route he's on is called the Anguished One's, that's misleading. Kaito got the idea to overthrow Polaris, the Administrator of multiple parallel worlds, and having humans persue true, unhindered freedom...from talking to the Anguished One over the course of the week. Seeing that the Anguished One (going by Saiduq when he joins the team) genuinely cared about humans and gave them so much with all the love of a kind parent...awakened something in him. It got him thinking about the nature of Polaris and what would happen if there were a different admin who cared about humans, and if he could defeat the other Septentriones then...why not go for it? All Kaito did was take the ideas that Saiduq gave him and reflect them back, getting him to actually think on his own. "Straying from our path isn't bad." "Polaris is wrong." "Why not overthrow him?" "Think about it." Every time Saiduq thought of a way for something to go wrong or not work, Kaito smacked it aside and showed him a clear reflection of Saiduq's own wishes, for a world where people could truly be free. And really, he does this for everyone he meets, it's just that this instance is a really good example of what he does. Kaito gets on their level and helps them understand their own selves, to where they can become comfortable with who (and what) they are. Shining more like the moon instead of the sun, he reflects his friends' brilliance back at them and gives them the strength they need to achieve whatever they want.
Backstory:
Game Link and Protag Link.
Kaito was an Average High School Student(tm) before the Septentrione Invasion, living near the subway station and being neighbors with Daichi. He's a good student and has a great memory and talent for test-taking, but he's the irresponsible one of the two, preferring to go after comedic pursuits or a least work on his talent with electronic music than go after something called a "job". Both of his parents work a lot, so he became used to either being alone in the house or heading over to Daichi's. He's closer to his mom than his dad since she works shorter hours and his dad is way too serious and stern for the two of them to ever have a comfortable relationship. He's still worried about them, though, and isn't even sure whether or not they died during the invasion.
They're probably dead, though.
Canon Powers:
Like Daichi and the rest of the group, Kaito has a small amount of spiritual energy that lets him access Nicaea and use the Summoning App. This allows him to use magical attacks, the skills being stored on his phone. These are:
Taunt: Enemies will target user, but user will receive less damage. (A Buff, used on self)
Sexy Gaze: Moderate chance of inflicting Charm ailment to all enemies. (Mind)
Death Call: Instantly kills all enemies suffering from Poison, Paralyze or Charm ailment. (Mind)
Kaito is also more physically fit than the average person, having gone through a week-long period of fighting monsters and aliens, but he concentrated more on becoming adept at magic and avoiding attacks than becoming physically strong or increasing his vitality. He concentrates more on either having his demons exploit enemy weaknesses and kill them before they can even attack or, if they can't, then incapacitate the enemy before they can do anything. If he's not the one healing somebody, it's guaranteed that one of his demons is picking that up.
Canon Weapons|Items:
Only weapons Kaito has are either his fists or whatever he can grab to improvise (physical) or his Summoning App.
Canon Allies:
Kaito is a Demon Tamer and has access to two demons on his phone through the Summoning App.

3rd Person Example
At first, Kaito couldn't believe what he was seeing. This should have stopped being a Thing right after that fateful Sunday, but leave it to humans to still find new and different ways of being surprised. Or surprising others, for that matter.
It was The Truck. Just...sitting in the street. Minding its own business, its tires completely destroyed, its body burned and dented beyond help and more fluids leaking out of the engine than normal. The Truck Daichi used to weaken Dubhe...
How did it...get here? Kaito cautiously took a step forward and poked at the truck's body. Just a little.
The engine fell out with a loud crash, causing passerby to stare longer than he wanted.
"...Haha. I hope my car insurance covers this!" It wasn't the greatest, but at least it got pedestrians to stop staring at him like a freak! Or try to...ignore him on purpose, whichever. Not that he normally minded but...this city was so similar to places like Tokyo or Osaka, but...different, somehow. He weirded out the natives just by existing here, he knew that and it made sense, but it still kinda...hurt a little. And he was trying to attract as little attention as possible, but then the truck...
...Hmm. If they found a mechanic or just someone who knows cars, then maaaaaybe it could be fixed. It could end up being a pretty sweet ride, even if it was just a delivery truck! A new paint job too...
He snapped a picture of the poor truck with his Comp and sent it to Daichi. Wait till he sees this!
